July Wedding Flowers: Seven Beautiful Seasonal Blooms for Summer Weddings

One of the questions I get asked most often is how to choose seasonal wedding flowers. Whether you’re planning your wedding or simply looking for flowers to brighten your home, seasonality is always where I recommend starting.

As a florist, I believe the most beautiful floral designs begin with what’s naturally blooming. Seasonal flowers are often healthier, longer lasting, and more expressive. They move differently, have richer color, and create the effortless, garden-inspired feeling that I love most.

Choosing flowers that are in season also gives you access to the freshest blooms available. Whenever possible, I encourage shopping locally—whether that’s through a flower farm, farmers market, or wholesaler specializing in locally grown flowers. Not only are you supporting local growers, but you’ll often find flowers with incredible character that simply can’t be shipped long distances.

Garden Roses

If someone asks me to name my favorite flower, I usually say it’s impossible to choose. But if you absolutely made me pick one, it would probably be the garden rose.

Garden roses have an unmistakable softness that works beautifully in almost every design style. They come in countless colors, shapes, and fragrances, making them one of my favorite flowers for July weddings. Whether you’re planning a romantic neutral palette or something colorful and playful, there’s almost always a garden rose that fits perfectly.

They’re timeless for a reason.

Dahlias

July marks the beginning of dahlia season. 

While they’re not yet at their peak, the first blooms of the season are incredibly beautiful. I especially love the coral and blush varieties that begin appearing in  early summer. They bring warmth and depth to summer wedding flowers while still feeling refined.

As the season continues into August and September, dahlias only become more spectacular.

Lisianthus

Lisianthus is one of my favorite accent flowers.

Its delicate blooms almost seem to flutter through an arrangement, reminding me a bit of butterfly ranunculus. I love how much movement it adds without competing for attention.

Available in soft whites, blushes, lavenders, and richer jewel tones, lisianthus transitions beautifully between color palettes. The buds are also one of my favorite details for boutonnieres because they stay elegant and understated.

Hydrangeas

Few flowers capture summer quite like hydrangeas.

Living in New England, one of my favorite memories each year was watching entire neighborhoods burst into bloom as hydrangea season arrived. There’s something undeniably magical about seeing them at their peak.

For weddings, hydrangeas create fullness almost instantly and can transform both bouquets and large-scale installations. Because they thrive during the summer months, July is one of the best times to incorporate them into your floral design.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are one of summer’s most recognizable blooms.

I’ll admit—they aren’t a flower I use often because they create a very specific aesthetic. But when they’re designed thoughtfully and paired with more unexpected textures, they become incredibly sophisticated.

They naturally bring warmth, joy, and a sense of celebration, making them a wonderful choice for couples embracing a golden summer palette.

Zinnias

Zinnias deserve far more attention than they usually receive.

What I love most is their incredible range of colors. From creamy whites to vibrant oranges, pinks, yellows, and deep reds, they make it easy to build layered summer color palettes.

They’re especially beautiful in sunset-inspired designs filled with warm peach, gold, coral, and raspberry tones, but white zinnias can also add wonderful texture to more neutral arrangements.

Cosmos

Last but certainly not least are cosmos—tiny little dancers.

Cosmos begin reaching their peak in July, and I find myself adding them whenever I can. Their airy stems create beautiful movement throughout an arrangement, giving designs a feeling that’s loose, natural, and almost windswept.

Although they appear incredibly delicate, they’re surprisingly resilient, making them one of my favorite flowers for adding softness without sacrificing longevity.
