My Patio Garden
We moved into a new home this past fall, and since then I’ve been dreaming of what I want for the patio. My goal this year is to keep it pretty simple.
I’m a big advocate for gardening anywhere. You don’t need tons of acres or a professional green thumb. You can do a lot in small spaces and I plan to do that with my patio garden.
We started a new tradition last Christmas–BK is getting me a rose bush every year at Christmas. The hope is that one day I will be able to permanently plant them in the ground and have a garden that he has gifted me over the years. This first year he gave me three (a dreamboat) and I planted them in large containers. I made sure not to do dark containers as that can keep the roses too warm and I bought large enough containers so that I will not need to repot.
I planted these garden roses:
So far these rose bushes from Heirloom Roses have done great. They came without leaves and within two weeks they had new leaves and have been growing steadily since. I think I may get a few blooms by the end of summer!

The Seeds
After I planted the roses, I took what pots I had left and filled them up with seeds. Below is a list of everything I planted. I wanted a mix of herbs, butterfly and bee attractors, and lots of color. We’ll see how it all shakes out but from what I learned with my last patio garden, more will grow than you think and you can have an abundant garden in no time!
The Seed List
- Lavender
- Cherry Caramel Phlox
- Basil
- King Size Apricot Aster
- Milkweed
- Spinach
- Butter Lettuce
- Portulaca Moss Rose
- Arugula
- Jasmine Vines
Happy gardening! If you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late. Start small if you need to–one pot, one flower.
Tend your gardens. xx Kaylyn
